The most perfunctory item in the shopping trolley in normal times, but manna from heaven in times of adversity and actually nothing short of a national obsession. Who knew that whispers of a malevolent virus would have Britain en masse making an undignified dash for the loo roll aisle of their local, or not-so-local supermarket and buying in quantities nothing short of paranoid...

Alison Allfrey is an ardent linguist and voracious traveller. Having studied French and German at Oxford, she has used her languages throughout her career in investment banking and investor relations consultancy. Travel, good food and exploring culture, music, art and beautiful places have always punctuated her life and fortunately she is married to someone for whom the outdoors, water and snow are manna from heaven. So when they were posted to Sweden in 2012 with their two young sons, the stage was set for adventure.
