Competition Rules:

  • All writers retain full ownership of their stories. Just because a story is inspired by a piece of art, does not mean the writer is limited in what they can do with that story. It still belongs entirely to the author.

  • Although writers retain full copyright of their stories, they won’t be able to use the artwork that inspired their story in any capacity unless they obtain permission from the artist. This is very important, because the artists have only entered into an agreement with Globe Soup, not the participating writers. While the artists have no legal claim on the stories inspired by their work, writers also have no claim on the artwork that inspired their story. So, when the winner has been announced, should you wish to publish your story elsewhere, you cannot legally use the artwork it was inspired by in any way without first getting written permission from the artist. We can assist in facilitating contact with that artist, but please be aware that they have every right to decline. Receiving no response from the artist also means you cannot use their artwork, of course. This is the law around copyright, and going against it could land you in serious legal trouble. So, you have been warned!

Writers and artists are creatives, and all creatives should respect copyright and each other.

  • All tickets are non-refundable, unless bought in error. Any refund requests must be made within 72 hours of purchase.

  • The competition is open to anyone aged 18 or over at the time of entering. International entries are welcome.

  • All entries must be written in English.

  • Entries must be fiction.

  • All entries must be written for adult or young adult readers. Short stories aimed at children are not allowed.

  • Entries must be no more than 500 words in length (excluding title). There is no minimum word requirement.

  • Entries must be the participants own original work. They must not have been published, self-published, published online, or made public on social media or featured among the winners in any other competition.

  • Entries must not include photographs or illustrations. Please do NOT include a picture of the artwork your story was inspired by when you submit. This is to mitigate against the judges’ artistic preferences influencing their opinion of the story.

  • All entries are judged anonymously. The participant's name must not appear anywhere on the submission piece.

  • No one associated with Globe Soup can enter this competition.

  • The artists chosen for this competition are not associated with Globe Soup or anyone who works for us.

  • The artists whose work has been featured in this competition are allowed to participate. However, they are not allowed to write a story inspired by their own work.

  • Entries can be resubmitted until the closing time. The last version we receive will be the one sent to the judges.

  • You can submit as many stories as you want, but you must ensure your tickets cover the total number of entries.

  • Globe Soup reserves the right to disqualify entries if the submission instructions have not been followed. Disqualification on this account is at Globe Soup’s discretion.

  • Globe Soup will not enter into any correspondence with participants about the result. The decision of the judges is final.

  • At this time Globe Soup cannot provide feedback on entries to the competition. If you want to get feedback on your entry, please join our Facebook group and participate in the feedback exchange.

  • The winner will receive £750. Globe Soup reserves the right to delay announcing the winner due to unforeseen circumstances.

  • The winner will be required to provide a short bio and a photograph of themselves to appear alongside the winning piece. A pen name or alias is permitted.

  • All participants own the rights to their work, and after the competition closes, they are free to publish elsewhere. The winner grants Globe Soup the right to publish the winning story on their website. Globe Soup will only publish the winning entry.

  • Globe Soup cannot, for any reason, choose NOT to award the prize.

  • Questions about the competition in general should be sent to info@globesoup.net. For a quick reply, direct any queries to our Facebook Page. Globe Soup cannot answer questions about individual entries where that question would remove the writer’s anonymity.
